The Savory Tale of the Masters Pimento Cheese Sandwich

Fresh Pimento Cheese sandwich wrapped in paper, ready to enjoy.

The Masters Pimento Cheese Sandwich has become as much a part of the Augusta Masters tradition as the iconic Green Jacket. It is known for its simplicity and delightful taste. This sandwich offers a taste of Southern tradition at a surprisingly affordable price—still $1.50. It is the Costco Hot Dog of Golf.

What Makes Pimento Cheese Special?

Pimento cheese is a Southern staple made from sharp cheddar cheese, pimento peppers, mayonnaise, and various seasonings. It’s loved for its creamy texture and robust flavour, making it a perfect sandwich filling.

Historical Origins:

The tradition of the Masters Pimento Cheese Sandwich dates back to the late 1940s, introduced by Hodges and Ola Herndon. The sandwich gained popularity quickly, becoming a Masters staple. In the mid-1950s, Nick Rangos took over the production, tweaking the recipe to what would become an iconic part of the Masters experience.

In 1998, production switched to the local Augusta restaurant chain Wife Saver, with Ted Godfrey becoming the face behind the sandwich. Production was taken in-house by Augusta’s internal catering company, and when asked for the recipe, Godfrey, like Rangos before him, who refused to provide the recipe to Godfrey, refused to hand it over to Augusta.

The fact that neither party wished to share the recipe is known as “PimentoGate,” as both Rango’s and Godfrey’s refusal to divulge the secret ingredient, even after their departures, left many speculating about the mysterious recipe that so many had come to love. Those who attend the Masters will still comment that the sandwiches are not the same as they once were.

Modern Imitations and Recipes:

Despite the guarded secret of the original recipe, many have tried to recreate the iconic Masters Pimento Cheese Sandwich. Chefs like Andy Hay from the East Coast Kitchen have his version of the recipe HERE that offer a taste close to that Masters patrons enjoy. Mother and Grandmother Gina Dickson, who lives in Augusta, Georgia, and has attended the Masters Golf Tournament for many years, has also published her attempt at Masters Pimento Cheese Sandwich HERE.

The Pimento Cheese Sandwich at the Masters is more than just food; it’s part of the tournament’s rich cultural fabric, blending tradition, secrecy, and a community’s love for golf and good food.
